This week pupils have been continuing to read the book Mill Girl, by Sue Reid.  The book is a series of diary entries written by a young girl, called Eliza, during the time of the industrial revolution.  Eliza is shocked when she is sent to work in the Manchester cotton mills – a noisy, suffocating working environment where the work is backbreaking and dangerous.  Pupils are using the book as inspiration for their own diary entries, which they have started to write.  These entries will be written from the point of view of a child working in a cotton mill during the industrial revolution.  Pupils will be working hard to include all the features of a diary entry that we have identified in previous weeks.

Our Jigsaw work has been about the effects of rumour-spreading and name-calling.  Pupils chose a topic, such as cyber-bullying, and then thought of ways in which this could be addressed in a positive manner and ways in which it could be addressed in a negative manner.

In Maths we have been continuing our work on addition and subtraction, particularly looking at questions which involve subtracting two 4-digit numbers (with more than one exchange) and subtracting numbers with more than four digits.  Pupils have attempted a range of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving activities.
