This week you will be working on solving two step equations and converting between imperial and metric measurements.

On Friday please continue with your CGP revision book completing a topic of your choice in both the standard and advanced book.

English Lessons

All your English work this week (comprehension, spelling, grammar and writing) will be based on the book Not My Idea by Anastasia Higginbotham. This book develops the work we have done so far this half term about the Civil Rights movement in America and around the world.

Comprehension work

Please answer these questions:

1. Find and copy a word on page 3 that means “take apart”.
    
2. Locate these American-English words in the text and write down the word that we would usually use in Britain:           sidewalk       mom
    
3. Use your deduction skills work out the meanings of these words. (Ask an adult and/or look in a dictionary to help you.)    
   supremacy (p3)    outrageous (p33)     eviction (p34)            exploited (p35)
    
4. Look at pages 8 and 9.  Write 3 adjectives to describe how the little girl is feeling.
    
5. Read the speech bubbles on page 23.  What would you say to each of these people? Write a sentence for each.
    
6. On page 24, why do you think the adult tells the little girl to “come away from the TV now”?  What do you think about this?

For a further challenge…
Look at the illustrations on pages 14 and 15.  How does the picture help you understand the text?  Find other examples of illustrations in the book that add important information to make the author’s point.
What do you think the author means by “a strong internal sense of justice” (p63)? What does this mean to you, and do you think it is important?

Spelling work

This book has been written by an American author and there are lots of examples of American spellings in the book.  Most of these are words that, in English spelling, would contain the 'our' 'pattern. 

Learn the spellings of these words, make sure you know what they mean, and use each of them in a sentence. 

Which of the words can you find in Not My Idea, and how does the American spelling differ from the English spelling?  Is there a pattern?

Grammar work                                                                                                              

Review learning about Standard English on  the  discovery education website where you should:

 then search for Standard English in the search box in Espresso.

There are many examples of non-standard English in the book.  Find 8 examples and rewrite the sentences in Standard English.

A further challenge, compare the standard/non-standard versions.  Write down why you think the author chose to write in non-standard English, and what you think about this.  Was it effective? Can you find some examples of text written in Standard English within this book?  Why do you think the author chooses to do this?   

Writing Challenge

 You should spend two lessons planning and drafting.

Challenge 1 Make your own poster to promote the idea that “Knowledge is power”. (p64)  Include text on your poster to explain why you believe this is true and why it is important.

Challenge 2 Collect cuttings from newspapers to help you tell your own story about unfairness and what you think should be done about it. Combine the cuttings with your own writing and illustrations to explain your ideas.

Challenge 3 Read pages 54 and 55.  What do you want your story to be? Write about your own hopes for the world you would you like to live in, as you grow up and when you are an adult.  What changes would you like to see?  Think about fairness, attitudes and equality. (Think carefully about the verb tense you choose.  You might use some examples of the subjunctive mood and you might write some passive sentences.)

When you have finished your English work, email it to your teacher.

(Year 6, if you are in Bubble 2 it would be especially helpful if you email your work to your bubble teacher, so that we can review and edit them in an English lesson next week.)

Challenge 1 Look at the picture cards below the worksheets in the challenge file and answer the questions about the Andes on worksheet 3A

Challenge 2 Look at the picture cards below the worksheets in the challenge file and do the independent research necessary to answer the questions about the Andes on worksheet 3B.

Challenge 3 Look at the picture cards below the worksheets in the challenge file and do the independent research required to complete the fact file on Worksheet 3C or alternatively create your own detailed information sheet about the Andes in any format you feel is appropriate.

History Lesson

What was Apartheid?

This week in history we are going to learn about Apartheid in South Africa. This will form a solid foundation which we can build upon next week when look at the enormity of the achievements of Nelson Mandela during his life time.

Firstly you should go to the DUCKSTERS education site page below to begin your research into Apartheid.

If you prefer to listen to the information rather than reading it then click on the sound button at the bottom of the page. Once you have read the information it or listened to it try the quiz to test your understanding.

Your challenges – choose one from below

Challenge 1        Write a paragraph to explain at least 3 ways in which black people and white people were treated differently during Apartheid.

Challenge 2        Write an account of what you have learned about Apartheid for a history book with a target audience of children between ages 7 and 9.  You will need to make the explanations very clear and give examples and possibly illustrations too.

Challenge 3        Imagine you are living through Apartheid in South Africa and you feel compelled to speak out against the regime. Write the speech you would give to a gathering of people your age to persuade them to come together and speak out themselves to create change. You can write this from the perspective of a black person or a white person living at that time.

RE Lesson

UKS2 (Y5/6)

The Gospels tell good news stories of Jesus as a teacher, a healer and a miracle worker.

Think about all the Gospel stories you know.  If you have a Bible, you can have a look to remind yourself.  Can you list as many Gospel stories as you can under each of the three headings?

For a further challenge…

Think about the impact these stories have on believers.  Which type of story do you think has the most powerful influence on believers? Explain your answer with detailed reference to at least one Gospel story that you know well.  Try to explain why the story you have chosen is good news to Christians today.

Art Lesson

You will learn about a famous artist and use a technique to produce something unique.  This lesson also reviews and applies skills you have practised in the art lessons that you have done at home over the past few months.
