Week 1

Monday Morning Assembly

You will be aware that people have taken to the streets in America and elsewhere in the world to protest after the death of George Floyd.

We are going to begin our week with a short video assembly where a woman explains how, as 10 year old girl, the memory of Dr Martin Luther King’s speech –‘I have a dream’- has stayed with her across the years…an inspiration to carry on striving for justice and freedom for everyone.

Please watch at https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00w4f4d

Or search for School Radio – Assemblies KS2, Dream on: Martin Luther King

The video last for 6 minutes.

History

In the assembly, Dream on: Martin Luther King, you will have learned that Martin Luther King was fighting for freedom and justice for everyone. You will remember that black people were only allowed to sit in certain seats on the bus. One lady challenged this notion and her name was Rosa Parks. We are going to learn about how she brought abought change through her own actions.

Firstly, open the Rosa Parks PowerPoint and read the story of her life and tremendous fight for freedom and justice.

Next watch the BBC teach clips video of Rosa Parks where she tells the story of her life and explains how her actions led towards equality and justice for everyone, whatever the colour of their skin.

You will find it at

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/history-ks1-ks2-rosa-parks/z7rtvk7

Finally your task.

Choose from one of the following.

Challenge 1   Create a Rosa Parks fact file.

This should include her date of birth and death, where she was from and details of why she is a significant person in history.

Challenge 2  Write a historical biography of Rosa Parks

This will be written in the past tense, structured in paragraphs in chronological order and give details of her childhood, how her life was different from that of white people as she grew up and what made her strive for change. You final paragraph should comment on the way she made a difference for others.

Challenge 3   Be an investigative journalist

Imagine you are a journalist covering the boycott for a television news channel.  Write a list of questions that you would want to ask witnesses at the boycott and then prepare a report on what is happening and why to be read on the news bulletin that evening.

Geography

In geography this half term we are studying the continent of South America. We will begin with a lesson finding out about the location and countries of South America.

Let’s begin by thinking about what do you already know about South America?

Write down as many things as you can about this amazing continent – do you already know the names of some countries? Some capital cities? The names of any rivers or mountain ranges or any native animals? What languages are spoken in South America and which seas and oceans surround it?

Now open the file named South America Slide 1

Read the information on the slides carefully – can you answer all the questions on the first page now?

Next open the file South America Work 1

There are 4 sheets here.

Choose 1 of the challenges below to label all 12 countries

Challenge1   Sheet 1A   Label the countries with the help of some missing letters

Challenge 2   Sheet 1B    Label the countries with no clues

Challenge 3  Sheet 1C  Label the countries without any clues and name their capital cities

Final challenge

Sheet 1D should be fun for everyone unscrambling the anagrams of South American countries.

If you have enjoyed this lesson you may want to look at the website Seterra which is a map quiz game where you to select a continent and interactively label the countries. You can time yourself too if you are feeling competitive!

https://online.seterra.com/en/l/sam will take you straight to the South America page.

Art

Drawing plants in pencil.

RE

This half term our theme will be Good News. As you know, the New Testament begins with four Gospels, or 'Good News' books, about the life and ministry of Jesus.

In his Gospel, John tells us several examples of Jesus teaching people using 'I am' statements:

I am the bread of life

I am the true vine and my father is the gardener

I am the light of the world

I am the good shepherd

I am the way, the truth and the life

I am the resurrection and the life

Choose some of these images to illustrate and write an explanation of the metaphors.

Take time to reflect on how these images of Jesus help Christians to understand and develop a relationship with God. You might like to write a personal reflection on how these images help you in your thinking and belief.
